Abstract

This research analyzes the management of solid medical waste at RSJD Atma Husada Mahakam in Samarinda, East Kalimantan. The primary issue is the suboptimal handling of medical waste, which is classified as hazardous and toxic waste (B3), despite existing regulations. The study aims to examine waste characteristics, assess sorting, transportation, and disposal processes, and identify key challenges. Using a descriptive observational approach, data was collected through interviews, observations, and documentation studies. The findings reveal that infectious and chemical waste dominate the waste stream. While sorting, containment, and transportation generally comply with standard operating procedures (SOPs), mixing of waste by patients or their families remains a problem due to a lack of awareness. Major constraints include behavioral factors, inadequate infrastructure, and insufficient training. The study concludes that medical waste management implementation is hindered by compliance gaps and educational shortcomings. To address these issues, the researchers recommend intensive training programs and the development of easily understandable educational materials for all stakeholders.
